Siem Offshore Contractors gets to work on Nordsee One

Siem Offshore Contractors has begun cable installation work on the Nordsee One offshore windfarm in the German sector of the North Sea. The company is using two of its vessels, the cable lay vessel (CLV) Siem Aimery and the installation support vessel (ISV) Siem Moxie

Siem Aimery recently loaded the first batch of submarine composite cables onto its turntables at the JDR Cable Systems facilities in Hartlepool in the UK. The first batch of Seaproof Solutions’ cable protection systems were also loaded onto the CLV. Prior to loading, the newly-delivered CLV underwent final outfitting: a trencher and two work-class remotely operated vehicles from LD TravOcean were mobilised on board together with their launch and recovery systems, which are suitable for operations in significant wave heights of up to 3m.

Siem Moxie has been deployed to assist the CLV for the submarine cable pull-in, termination and testing activity. The ISV is equipped with offshore support units (OSUs) containing generators, pull-in winches, tools and equipment for personnel support on the turbine foundations. The OSUs are being transferred using the vessel’s motion-compensated crane; the ship’s active motion-compensated walk-to-work gangway is being used to safely transfer personnel to and from the individual foundations in significant wave heights of up to 3m. Siem Moxie has already established a track record of more than 30,000 safe transfers to and from foundations since delivery a little over two years ago.

SOC was awarded an engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning contract for the inner array grid cable system for Nordsee One in 2014. Regis Rougier, managing director of Siem Offshore Contractors said of the project: “We are proud to have our ‘Siem Duo’ in the field. We had a vision back in 2012 for a new installation methodology, which has come to fruition and demonstrates to market players a new approach to safe and cost-efficient submarine cable installation.”
